Individual Therapy
Sometimes you know exactly what is troubling you. Other times, you may simply recognise that something doesn't feel right.
Individual therapy offers a confidential space to understand what you are experiencing, identify what you would like to change, and develop practical ways of moving forward.
At The Relational Practices, we provide individual therapy for adults in Barbados and across the Caribbean region. Our therapists work collaboratively with you and tailor therapy to your needs, experiences and goals.
How Can Individual Therapy Help?
Adults seek therapy for many different reasons. You may benefit from individual therapy if you are experiencing:
Anxiety, worry or persistent stress
Depression, sadness or low mood
Trauma or the effects of difficult past experiences
Grief, bereavement or a significant loss
Relationship or family difficulties
Major life transitions
Work-related stress or burnout
Problems with self-esteem or confidence
Feeling stuck or uncertain about important decisions
Self-harming or self-sabotaging behaviours
Suicidal thoughts
Difficulties related to alcohol or substance use
Difficulty coping with overwhelming emotions
Patterns in your life or relationships that you would like to understand or change
You do not need to be in crisis to begin therapy. Some adults come to therapy because they want a better understanding of themselves, their relationships, their experiences or patterns that keep repeating in their lives.
Our Approach to Adult Individual Therapy
Our therapists use evidence-informed approaches based on your needs, preferences and therapy goals.
Solution-Focused Brief Therapy
Solution-Focused Brief Therapy helps you identify what you want to change and recognise strengths, resources, and strategies that may already be helping.
Rather than focusing only on problems, we also explore times when the problem has been less intense or when you have managed difficult situations successfully.
Narrative Therapy
Narrative Therapy helps you explore the stories and meanings you have developed about yourself and your experiences.
It can help separate you from the problem and create space to recognise strengths, values, abilities and possibilities that may have been overshadowed by difficult experiences.
Trauma-Focused Therapy
Many of the concerns adults bring to therapy connect to painful, overwhelming, or distressing experiences.
Our clinicians take a trauma-focused approach that considers how past and present experiences may affect your emotions, relationships, beliefs about yourself and responses to stress.
All of our clinicians are either EMDR trained or EMDR certified. Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, or EMDR, is an evidence-based psychotherapy that helps people process distressing experiences and reduce their ongoing impact on daily life.
Where appropriate, EMDR may be integrated into your individual therapy based on your needs, goals and readiness for this type of work.
Therapy That Considers Your Relationships and Context
Although individual therapy focuses on you, we recognise that people do not experience difficulties in isolation.
Your family, relationships, culture, work, community and previous experiences can all influence how you understand yourself and respond to challenges.
Our therapists therefore take a relational and contextual approach to adult therapy. We work with you to understand both the difficulties you are facing and the relationships, experiences and environments that may be shaping them.
