Brandon Koo, Registered Counselling Psychologist
Hi, I’m Brandon Koo, a Registered Counselling Psychologist at The Relational Practices in Barbados.
I work with individuals and couples across different ages, cultures, identities, and backgrounds.
My areas of particular interest include ADHD, neurodivergence, trauma, EMDR therapy, and couples therapy. At the heart of my work is the belief that people thrive when they feel connected, understood, secure, and supported.
ABOUT Brandon
“I am originally from Trinidad and Tobago and completed my undergraduate studies at the University of British Columbia in Canada, where I received the International Leader of Tomorrow Scholarship. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Spanish before completing my Master of Science in Counselling Psychology at The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus.
My professional experience includes work in school-based behaviour intervention programmes, substance misuse treatment settings, and international mentorship programmes for high-achieving students. In my clinical work, I have supported adolescents and adults experiencing trauma, depression, anger, relationship difficulties, and other emotional concerns.”
ADHD and Neurodivergence
I am certified as an ADHD Clinical Care Services Provider and work with adolescents and adults navigating ADHD-related challenges. These may include difficulties with attention, organisation, emotional regulation, school or work performance, relationships, and everyday routines.
I also work with parents and families who want to better understand ADHD and find practical ways of supporting a young person at home and at school.
Couples Therapy
My work with couples is informed by Emotionally Focused Therapy, or EFT. I have completed an EFT Externship, which has strengthened my ability to help couples identify recurring patterns of conflict and disconnection, better understand the emotions underneath those patterns, and develop healthier ways of responding to each other.
Trauma-Focused Therapy and EMDR
I also provide trauma-focused therapy and have completed the first stage of training in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, or EMDR. This has expanded the way I work with clients whose difficult past or present experiences continue to affect their emotions, relationships, sense of self, and daily functioning.
My Approach to Therapy
I aim to create a therapeutic space that is sincere, open, affirming, and collaborative. My practice is LGBTQIA+ affirming, and I welcome clients across different sexual orientations, gender identities, relationship structures, cultures, and backgrounds.
I am particularly mindful of the additional burdens that stigma, discrimination, and marginalisation can place on individuals and families.
I provide therapy through The Relational Practices for clients in Barbados and across the Caribbean region.
Beyond Therapy
Outside of therapy, I enjoy going to the gym, watching anime, reading comics, writing, reading, and liming at the beach with family and friends.
